Wash stood under Maine's gaze nervously. The big guy had stepped in front of him at the cafeteria and wasn't budging. He was clearly trying to communicate with his garbled growls, but Wash didn't know what he wanted. And he couldn't just step around him. The guy had just got out of recovery. So, he was just sort of frozen. As he was starting to get too nervous to figure out what to do, Florida stepped around Maine and smiled.
"Hey, guys, what's going on?"
Maine looked down at Florida and made the exact same growling noises as he had at Wash.
"Oh, sure," Florida replied. "Excuse me, Wash."
Wash stepped aside as Florida reached around him to grab an apple. He put it in Maine's hand and carried on as usual. Like it was no big deal. Wash and Maine exchanged surprised looks, but Maine's was tinted with a smile.
It was just an apple, but that was the first time anyone had understood Maine since he lost his voice. He followed after Florida happily.
